Founded in 1903, ABC is the third largest national daily newspaper in Spain. Located in Madrid, this conservative-leaning newspaper, with an average size of 130 pages, is known for its trademark large cover photo and smaller, stapled format. During the Spanish Civil War, in the late 1930's, the paper became split for a short time, with one edition supporting the Nationalists and the other supporting the Republicans. El País (Spanish for "The Country"), has the highest daily circulation of any newspaper in Spain. Headquartered in Madrid with regional offices throughout the country, El País also produces and distributes a world edition in Latin America. First published in 1976, shortly after the death of dictator Francisco Franco, El País became the first pro-democracy newspaper in the country.
